Death, Pain And Love by Rich Perez
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised. (Song of Solomon 8:6-7 ESV)
Remember today that though death, suffering and pain are relentless and they will knock on everyone’s door, we can say the same about love. Even more so!Remember that Christ’s love to us was “strong as death”, because it broke through death itself. He “loved us, and gave himself for us.” Jesus shows us that love is powerfully relentless. When our love fails to surrender affections and actions, when our love fails to show power and perseverance, we can sing with this song the reminders of the one whose love has not failed – “Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD.”Remember that there are no treasures on earth that would get us this love. And because Jesus was already scorned and despised on the cross, love becomes not something earned because of you, but rather something gifted in spite of you.Prayer: God, thank you for your words of reminder to us. Help us to remember that you love us like we've never experienced. Your love is like that of a faithful husband. May that love transform us to see and engage others in the same way. Amen!Rich Perez is the pastor at Christ Crucified Fellowship in Washington Heights, NYC. Pastor Rich is married and has two beautiful children.
