Christianese Defined: "Saved"

Christianese Defined: "Saved"

saved_previewYou will often hear Christians talking about being saved, or how you need to be saved, or how their friend just got saved.  What in the world are they talking about?Well, thankfully this is one piece of our vernacular that we actually get from the Bible.  If you do a word search for “saved” on your favorite Bible search engine, you will come up with a lot of references from the Old Testament that are talking about God’s people being saved from their enemies.  That gives you a clue as to what the word means in the New Testament and to what Christians mean when we say it today.Mankind’s ultimate enemies are sin and death (a.k.a. spiritual separation from God).  Through Jesus’s perfect life, sinless death and miraculous resurrection, He defeated the power of sin and death.  When we put our trust in Jesus to rescue us from sin and death and restore us to a right and loving relationship with God, rather than trusting in ourselves and our own ability to be good enough, we are “saved”!  It takes belief in Christ, submission to His authority and surrendering control of our lives to a loving God who literally died to save us!  It’s a big deal, which is why Christians talk about it so much. Here are some verses that will hopefully clear this up even more:For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.  John 3:17And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’  Acts 2:21And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”  Acts 4:12Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.  Romans 5:9-10If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is savedRomans 10:9-10But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  Ephesians 2:4-8When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.  Titus 3:4-7Oh, and by the way…because Jesus freely offers to save us, we love to call him our “Savior”.  What does “being saved” mean for you?
